Two weeks on the magnificent Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, with options to make it your own.
Get to know the unique Mayan culture and Mexico’s beautiful wildlife with this itinerary.
Are you visiting the Yucatan peninsula and want to get as much green in as possible? Have a look at this itinerary. It’s nature-focussed with visits to cenotes, natural areas and snorkeling. I put in a bit of native Mayan culture as well, you can’t miss that when you’re there and wildlife tends to hang around those places anyway!
Day 1 – Arrival Cancun, travel to and stay in Puerto Morelos
Options: visit botanical gardens, go snorkeling
Day 3 – Travel to and stay in Valladolid
Options: explore Valladolid town and its artisanal shops, explore the cenotes, take a tour to Rio Lagartos and Ek Balam ruins, visit Punta Laguna and Coba ruins
Day 6 – Travel to and stay in Bacalar
Options: walk around Bacalar, explore the lake by boat, float down the rapids, take a tour to Calakmul ruins
Day 9 – Travel to and stay in Tulum
Options: cycle to the beach, explore the ruins, visit Sian Kaan nature reserve
Day 11 – Travel to and stay in Cozumel
Options: go diving or snorkeling, take a whale shark tour, scooter around the island, visit the ruins
Day 14 – Travel to Cancun, fly back home
Note: You can easily reverse this trip! Do you have an early morning flight back home? In that case it would be good to not end with Cozumel. Cozumel is an island, so you would need time to take the ferry and the bus back to Cancun. From Puerto Morelos it’s only half an hour to Cancun Airport.
Need more time to relax? You have two options: you can skip the more touristy Tulum and add those days to Bacalar or Cozumel. Tulum has beautiful ruins that could be visited on your way to Cozumel, if you don’t want to miss them. Alternatively, you skip travelling to Bacalar, which is the furthest location in the trip. This provides some more time as you don’t have the travel time to the south of Quintana Roo.
Do you have more time? I suggest staying longer at some of the towns in the list and taking more time to explore. We personally loved Valladolid. It’s not as touristy as other towns, has the lovely Pueblo Magico vibe, lots of great food places, and is a great base to explore the peninsula.
